Story

Married small-time con artists Lou-Jean (Goldie Hawn) and Clovis Poplin (William Atherton) lose their child in Texas and decide to do whatever it takes to get him back. Lou-Jean bails Clovis out of prison, and the two steal the son from his foster home, taking a highway patrolman hostage. As a vast network of con artists begins to pursue them across Texas, the couple become unlikely folk heroes and even begin to bond with the captured cop.
