My review – Black Pigeons Streaming on Netflix My rating
8.5/10 Remembering such wonderful British sentimental Christmas films as Love Actually and Christmas for Two, Black Doves has a surprising number of such festive moments in six dramatic episodes. I say surprisingly because this British spy thriller has some very violent moments with shootings, executions and some very dark moments, but these walls are almost comical, or perhaps, like many others, I have become a little desensitized to violence on television and in cinema . Black Pigeons is expertly directed by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning and written by Joe Burton.
Reid is the real star in Black Pigeons because she sells secrets to the highest bidder, regardless of national loyalty
Starring Ben Whishaw, Keira Knightley and Sarah Lancashire, all in top form playing very dark characters with double lives who work together and independently to solve the murder of a prominent Chinese diplomat. Playing a completely different role than anything I’ve seen before, Ben Whishaw plays Sam Young, the friend of Helen Webb, played by Keira Knightley. These two unlikely trained assassins work for their ruthless boss Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire in another excellent departure from their usual roles as police inspectors.
The second minor role that I liked was played by Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, another ruthless recruiter-killer
“Black Pigeons” develops quickly with many interesting characters, including Helen Wallace’s husband, an influential and ambitious politician who does not notice his wife’s double life until the dramatic finale. As I mentioned earlier, I was surprised by some of the light touches of snowy walls, Christmas carols, and gift-giving around the tree, which I felt added another dimension to what could have been a very dark series. I suspect and hope that we will see another season of Black Pigeons, this is a quality production.
