Werner Herzog presents a documentary about the French volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice Krafft
I’d never heard of this couple, and suddenly they get two documentaries in quick succession. Herzog has the name and the pedigree, but the second film has an Oscar nomination. It’s fascinating to see them back to back and compare them, with Herzog using almost exclusively footage shot by the couple.
Helens eruption footage
I noticed the classic Mount St. I’m sure there’s other footage that isn’t Krafft’s to fill out the story. It’s very compelling that Herzog tells us early in the film that they’re going to die on that Japanese mountain.
He’s the one pontificating
It’s like introducing a dead body at the beginning of a murder mystery film. Both documentaries use amazing footage of the couple, but this one doesn’t have their voices. It’s all Herzog’s narration, like in most of his films.
That’s the main difference
Throughout the film, I kept wanting to hear the couple’s voices, or at least their words. It’s more like a show of respect at a funeral, and that may be the intention. I just feel better about the couple from another film.
