Story
CIA agent Joe tries to balance his personal and professional life as the spearhead of the CIA’s war on terror. Real military advisors helped make the gun handling, house cleaning, location, squad operations, etc. more credible. Mr. Sheridan knows how to transport us into testosterone-soaked macho worlds without clichés or apparent intentions.
Guys are easy
That’s what. No apologies are needed. His characters are always grounded, and he plays them with extreme skill. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good, if not better, than the men’s.
Women are smarter, more complex
Beth in Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit naturally, easily into the world of the story. They are strong and compelling. Not just “the… partner” or T&A. She upped her game with Faith Hill’s excellent character, who she played devastatingly in 1883 and then Dame Mirren followed in the flop 1923 . Now Zoe Saldana gives the best work of her career.
Honesty comes first!
I totally approve of her being the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). But I appreciate Oliveira as a woman broken by burning anger who won’t give up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her beat up a 100-pound muscular male comrade. I find her character much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked unconscious or simply pinned to the ground before she gives up. Are we talking about Jill Wagner now, or her hair? What a turn!
I’ll buy it
From schmaltzy Hallmark trash to super cool special powers? Special mention: Ms. Lanier as the mean teenage daughter. I’m looking forward to the story arc set up for this loose canon as long as they continue to avoid the cliché of teenage angst. Good actor, could be interesting…
